Why your data feels thin on day one
Attribution data needs context — sessions, returns, multi-touch journeys. Here's why day one looks sparse and when it fills in.
Day one of any analytics tool is the same story: you log in, the dashboard looks half-empty, and you wonder if it's broken.
It's not broken. Attribution data has a property other metrics don't — it gets richer as time passes, even on visitors you've already seen. Here's why, and what to expect at each milestone.
What "thin" actually looks like
In your first 24 hours, you'll most likely see:
- Visitor counts that match Shopify's storefront analytics, roughly. Good — that means the pixel is firing.
- Mostly single-session visitor journeys. Most people land, browse, and either bounce or convert in one session. Multi-session journeys (the ones that show real attribution stories) take days to accumulate.
- A direct-heavy channel breakdown. First-day data over-counts direct traffic because returning visitors haven't returned yet to reveal their original source.
- Attribution model comparisons that look identical. First-touch and last-touch produce nearly the same numbers when most journeys are single-touch. The differences emerge with multi-touch journeys.
None of this is a bug. It's the nature of behavioural data.
Why attribution needs context
Attribution is a story about how a visitor first found you, what brought them back, and what closed the sale. With one session, there's only a "what closed it" — first and last are the same touch.
The picture sharpens when these three things start happening:
- Visitors return. A returning visitor reveals that their first session wasn't the only one. Now first-touch and last-touch tell different stories.
- Visitors convert across multiple sessions. Most ecommerce purchases happen on the second, third, or fifth visit. Each conversion that involves multiple sessions adds a multi-touch journey to your data.
- Channel diversity emerges. The first 24 hours might be dominated by whoever happened to visit. By day three you have a representative sample.
When the picture sharpens

These are typical patterns, not guarantees. High-traffic stores fill in faster. Stores with longer purchase consideration windows (high-ticket, considered purchases) need more time.

How to read your trial week
Don't try to make decisions on day-one data. Use the trial week to:
- Day 1–2: Confirm tracking is correct. Run the verification checklist. Open a few visitor journeys and learn the UI.
- Day 3–4: Pick an attribution model that matches the question you care about most. See Picking the right attribution model.
- Day 5–7: Compare what you're seeing against your other tools (Meta Ads, GA4). Numbers won't match — and that's by design. Each platform tracks what it can see; FTS sees the order of touches the others can't.
By day seven, the data is dense enough to start making decisions with. Day one is dense enough to confirm the plumbing works.
A useful mental model
Think of attribution data like a photograph in a darkroom. The image is being captured the moment install completes — every visitor, every session, every order. But the picture only becomes readable as the chemistry develops.
Day one is the first 30 seconds in the developer. Day seven is when you take it out and frame it.
